My 2nd Grade Reader

Yay! One month in and Kwame has one reading book down! 9 more to go. I'm so proud of him and the pro reader he's growing into.  He's able to read aloud all by himself 99% of the time except for a few big words.

What 2nd Grade Books Are We Reading?
Our curriculum (Abeka) comes with 12 reading books for the whole school year of 9months and that's what we are going to be using for now. Each of the books is about 145 pages. We thank God he hasn't had any challenges with reading just yet, except that he gets grumpy towards the end when he's tired lol.

So here are the selected books for Abeka's grade 2;

1. Fun with friends

I love the fact that at the end of each chapter there are about 3-4 questions for the child to answer to test how well they understood the text they read.

There are also a list of words from the chapter to practice; this is to help improve the child's vocabulary & spelling ability.

Remaining Books to be Read
2. Quests for Adventure.

3. Across the Meadow.

4. All Kinds of Animals.

5. Growing Up Around the World. ( I loved this book. It introduces to child to several cultures around the world, their greetings, famous places etc- mostly European, American & Asian. From Africa, only Nigeria & Kenya are mentioned. So! I am currently putting together a list of more African countries for the sake of our African heritage. I'll share the pdf when done.

6. *Growing Up Early in America (we may or may not need this. Looking for a local alternative - Ghana / Africa).

7. Through The Skies.

8. Wonders of Imagination

9. Growing Up Where Jesus Lived.

10. My New Name.

11. Handbook for Reading.

12. Primary Bible reader  (On-going as we use this everyday as part of daily bible reading)

How We Are Going About Reading
Well since my day is mostly filled with keeping the home, teaching the kids and trying to build a business, I thought it'll be a really great idea to also get Daddy involved in the whole homeschooling process.
And how ecactly are we getting him involved, since he has a day job???

It was a hard thing to do but still thought what an awesome bonding opportunity this presented! And guess what?! he loved the idea! so we decided that I teach all the regular stuff (Arithmetic, Phonics, Writing, Language, Science etc) during the day and then daddy takes them through reading for about an hour each day before bed.
And it's worked out so far. Let's see how far this works out :)
